The Hip Hop Communiversity is a learning center started by a group of youth and
supporters who felt like sitting around just talking about the school system wasn’t enough.
So they started a school! The goal of the project is to coordinate culturally enriching entrepreneurial based activities
that address social and community development using technology as a bridge to future
employment. The program is hosted at the UmojaFest P.E.A.C.E. Center in central Seattle.
The Hip-Hop Communiversity features recording and video production studios and free
classes in the Music Business, Business & Entrepreneurship, Music Production, Debate,
Politics & Civics, Video Production, Theatre/Drama, Fashion Design & Merchandising,
Science of Flow/Art of Emceeing, DJing 101, Event Planning & Promotions and more.
Seattle Hip-Hop Summit Youth Council
Mondays 4pm-6pm (Library)
The Youth council is how youth participate in governing the Hip-Hop Communiversity, plan
events, activities, etc. providing experience in the area of organizational development and
management. The Seattle Hip Hop Summit Action Network Youth Council (SHSANYC) was
established in 2002 as a vehicle for youth empowerment and leadership development in
Seattle area following the first Seattle Hip-Hop Summit. SHSANYC is the northwest affiliate
of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network founded by Russell Simmons and Benjamin Chavis
in 2001. HSAN is the largest non-profit, national coalition of hip-hop artists, entertainment
industry leaders, education advocates, civil rights proponents, and youth leaders united
in the belief that Hip-Hop is an enormously influential agent for positive social change
which must be responsibly and proactively utilized to fight the war on poverty and injustice.

DJ 101 w/ DJ Kuhnex
Monday & Wednesday (Library)
DJ 101 teaches everything you need to know about manual and digital turntables and how to
use them with precision. From basic blending to scratching, you will discover the techniques
needed in order to rock parties and concerts! Whether you want to be a club/party dj, battle
dj or just develop a new hobby. Audio Production 101 w/ RC Tha Trackaholic
Tuesday 4pm - 6pm (Media Lab)
Recording Studio 101 teaches the basics of beat-making, song structure, sampling,
engineering (digital recording music & vocals) including digital recording equipment and
software (Pro Tools & Digital Performer). Students also learn the ropes of setting up your
studio on a budget, studio management and selling beats. Music Biz & Artist/Label Development
Thursday 4pm – 6pm (Library)
The Music Business & Artist Development workshop focuses on providing support to aspiring
artists in developing recording and performing skills while teaching about the business
of music. Find out how to set up your publishing company and how to properly file for
copyrights. Discover what it takes to trademark a name, logo, or design, how to get paid
shows, network for success and more. Graphic Design with SK Studios
Thursday 4pm-6pm (Media Lab)
Learn the basics and advanced techniques of graphic design using Adobe Photoshop
software. Make flyers, posters, logos, album art, business cards, t-shirt designs and more. Digital Media 101: The Art of Story Telling w/ Alvin Singh
Saturday’s 12pm-2pm (Media Lab)
It’s time to bring your stories to life in motion picture! This video production course focuses
on learning the basics of video production, including camera work, lighting, sound, editing
and distribution. Works will be showcased on UPC-TV and a DVD will be put together
showcasing the work of the class. Fashion Design & Merchandising 101 w/ Mac Fashions
Saturday 12pm – 2pm (Library)
In Fashion Design & Merchandising 101 participants are introduced to the fashion and
merchandising industry including design, sourcing, manufacturing, retail and wholesale
distribution. Participants learn about educational and career paths in the fashion industry
and gain hands on experience designing and marketing clothing and producing fashion
shows. Students can also learn basic modeling techniques and runway choreography, perform
standard backstage clothing management and perform in a fashion show. Students learn
about small business entrepreneurship through engagement with clothing designers and
retailers and other industry professionals. Boxing & Fitness Club
Saturday & Sunday 12pm -2pm (Fitness Studio)
Train with Theroughbred Boxing to box amateur and professionally or just get in a great work out.
Aligned with FirstLady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign to to combat childhood obesity, the
UPC Fitness Club was created to promote healthy lifestyle choices to youth and community. The
program also incorporates a variety of physical fitness techniques of the Nationally acclaimed
Bar-Tendaz program, an innovative fitness initiative based on kinesthetic aerobics in the pursuit of
healthy living. Additionally, participants in the program are trained to be
“Fitness & Wellness Ambassadors” to their families and communities.

GAME RECOGNIZE GAME Urban Sports Marketing Academy
Founded in 2008, the GAME RECOGNIZE GAME Urban Sports Management Academy is an experiential learning project for at-risk youth. The project introduces youth to the many business and career opportunities surrounding professional sports. Participants gain valuable skills including decision making, strategic planning, marketing and resource management by planning the annual Heal The Hood Outdoor Youth Basketball Tournament at Umoja Fest community basketball tournament and related activities. The curriculum uses professional sports as a lens to examine the attitudes and behaviors necessary for success on the court or playing field and in life. Guest speakers include professional and college athletes, sports agents, entertainment lawyers, sports journalists and more. Sew Beautiful Fashion Program
Sew Beautiful is a youth empowerment program for young women of color, dedicated to the exploration of fashion and pop culture media careers. The mission of Sew Beautiful is to promote the fashion arts and encourage entrepreneurship, education and mentorship. Our goal is to help raise awareness, and offer support through activities, mentorship and discussion. Sew Beautiful seeks to build self-esteem of young women, broaden their creative minds and help empower their true beauty within. Participants get an up-close view of the fashion industry with opportunities to meet and work with some of Seattle’s industry experts and get a glimpse of the fashion industry.
