Interview on KBCS about arrest at NAAM

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

The Wyking Report 3.18.2008: Knowledge-Build or Destroy

In light of recent events including my arrest at the opening of the NAAM, many people have inquired about what happened and why so I take it upon myself to illustrate as clear a picture as possible in terms of what I stand for and against below.

For a funny hip-hop perspective on the situation watch this video by Amanda Diva (comes in around 04:00 ):

We fought, struggled and sacrificed to develop a world class African American Heritage Center & Cultural Center featuring:

· Recording studios
· Film and video studios
· Radio and television station
· Performance hall
· Technology labs
· Performing arts
· Black businesses

Programs that would bring our youth in off of the streets to learn and develop their infinite potential. Secondly the building would house black businesses creating jobs and wealth in our community. In essence, it was to serve as cultural and economic hub for the stabilization and revitalization of Seattle 's black community.

The project was hijacked by downtown through the Urban League and we end up with an apartment complex with an exhibit/gallery space.
Ask yourself, does 36 apartments and the existing exhibits equal the founders vision or youth and community needs? How many youth programs are housed at the building? How many of our youth will be served daily in the space? How many businesses are housed there?

What we are against:

We are against policies and actions that produce the effects that we are currently experiencing as a community including:

· Underachievement and failure in school;
· Lack of business development and unemployment;
· crime, violence (including murder) and incarceration;
· Tokenism and symbolism without substance as it relates to equal opportunity
· lack of vision and hopelessness amongst youth and apathy among adults.

These policies and actions include:
· government facilitated corruption and fraud,
· the sabotage and destruction of black institutions and community,
· putting personal benefit above community benefit (i.e. selling out)

I think that individuals who represent these policies must be exposed and held accountable as they are detrimental to the well being of our children and community.

If you are interested in building an institution that cultivates our youth, mobilizes, energizes and revitalizes our community to successfully move into the future call 206.941.2527 or email wyking@theremixgroup.com.
